International football leagues rule the sporting world boasting the most famous sportsmen and teams in the world. Europe, especially, has infamous leagues where the best footballers and teams from around the globe come together to showcase their skills. The top 5 leagues include the Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A, and La Liga. During each season, which usually runs from August to May, teams compete for points with three points given for a win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss. The winning team is the one with the highest number of points, while the bottom teams are relegated.

The Premier League

As the highest league of English football, the Premier League  is immensely popular globally boasting fierce competition among leading players and clubs. It claims the impressive title of the most-watched sports league in the world. The league consists of 20 clubs including renowned teams such as Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, West Ham United, and Manchester City. Top players include the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, and Harry Kane, who have spent significant time in their careers playing in the league. For the 2022-2023 season, Manchester City were successful in winning the Premier League. But Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles with a total of 20.

Bundesliga

Germany’s top league, the Bundesliga, was founded in 1963 and the inaugural season took place with 16 teams competing. Nowadays, there are 18 clubs in the league including distinguished names such as Bayern Munich, FC Nürnberg, and Borussia Dortmund. Bayern Munich is by far the most celebrated with 33 championships and has seen great success outside of Germany. Many famous players have graced the league such as Robert Lewandowski, Gerd Muller, and Franz Beckenbauer.

Ligue 1

France’s highest division of football, Ligue 1, consists of 18 teams including infamous names such as Paris Saint-German, Saint-Étienne, Marseille, and Monaco. Paris Saint-German has won the league the most times with a total of 11 wins, while Saint-Étienne comes a close second with 10. The most recent winner of the league was Paris Saint-Germain. Lyon had a notable consecutive streak from 2002 to 2008. Ligue 1 Player of the Year winners include international superstars such as Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, and Zlatan Ibrahimović. In 2018, Kylian Mbappé’s move from Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain was the second most expensive transfer in football history at £163 million.

Serie A

Italy’s leading football league is called Serie A, boasting iconic clubs such as Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, AS Roman, and Napoli. Juventus has been an unstoppable force in Italian football, leading the way with 36 championships in the league. AC Milan and Inter Milan follow behind with a total of 19 wins each. Over the years, infamous players have played in Serie A such as Paolo Maldini, Francesco Torri, and Diego Maradona.

La Liga

La Liga is the top professional football league in Spain, it was established in 1929 and has a rich history of fantastic teams, footballers, and seasons. The biggest teams include Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atlético de Madrid. Barcelona was the first team to ever win and went on to claim the title another 26 times. In fact, they were the winners of the 2022 – 2023 season. However, Real Madrid is the most successful La Liga champion with a remarkable 35 wins under their belt. Notable players include the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema, and Luis Suarez. Neymar’s transfer from Barcelona to
