How Barcelona pulled massive transfers despite huge financial crisis

The summer transfer window of 2023 just came to an end with Barcelona pulling some of the biggest surprises in the football market.

Barcelona has been suffering a long standing financial crisis that have put them in tight situations while trying to buy new players or even renew their existing players contracts.

The Spanish club was reported to be technically bankrupt in June 2023 with debts that rises above €1 billion ($1.075 billion). They are still bent on using the 40% rule, where they’re only able to use 40% of whatever income the club earns.

Despite all of these, Barcelona have been able to handle their financial crisis well and still have some of the biggest names in football coming to their club. Little wonder how this is done.

After announcing former player, Deco as the new sporting director, Barcelona acquired some beautiful football talents. Champions League winner, Ilkay Gundogan being the first. Others include Joao Cancelo, Joao Felix, Oriel Romeu, Inigo Martinez and Vitor Roque. How?

The reputation Barcelona has earned over the years/decades of it’s existence as a football club was key in convincing these players to join not minding their financial situations. Players like Gundogan, Felix and Cancelo were happy to reduce their wages to join.

A feel of the pride that comes with wearing a Barcelona shirt is enough for these players who gave everything to make sure the club doesn’t get cut up in the FFP mess.
