Chelsea have secured an £80m deal to purchase the Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions after a year of negotiations. This move is a significant step towards Chelsea’s ambitious £2bn plan to revamp their stadium.

The purchase of the flats has faced criticism from some veterans who feel they are being forced out of their homes. There are concerns about the future of these residents, with fears of being neglected in care homes. However, both Chelsea and the Stoll charity trustees have reassured the veterans that their well-being is a top priority.

Chelsea’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jason Gannon, expressed the club’s excitement in expanding their presence near Stamford Bridge. He also praised the move as an opportunity to ensure that the club’s financial stability is maintained.

The Stoll charity trustees also emphasized their commitment to supporting and housing veterans, maintaining their mission of providing a fulfilling life for those who have served their country.

The veterans residing in the Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions, who have served in conflicts such as Korea, Northern Ireland, and Afghanistan, will need to relocate as part of the sale. However, Stoll will retain 20 flats on the site to continue supporting veterans in need.

Chelsea to play home matches elsewhere for some time

The planned expansion of Stamford Bridge is set to increase the stadium’s capacity from 41,000 to 60,000. This move will bring Chelsea in line with other top Premier League clubs in terms of stadium capacity.

The renovation is expected to last between four to five years before fans can be allowed back to the stadium. As a result, Chelsea may have to play their home matches at alternative venues when the process begins. The club is considering venues such as Wembley and Twickenham (Southwest London) as potential options.

There have been discussions about the need to choose a stadium closer to Stamford Bridge for ease of access.

Fulham’s Craven Cottage is a viable option during the redevelopment as it is just one mile away from Stamford Bridge. However, this could pose challenges in terms of revenue generation due to the smaller capacity of Craven Cottage compared to Stamford Bridge.
