However, the absent of a right back has thrust a new surprising potential in Cucurella. Reece James is out injured and Malo Gusto suspended. Cucurella, a natural left back was field by Mauricio Pochettino to fill in the right back position.

His first game as a right back was in the Carabao Cup against Brighton where he went head-to-head with in form Kaoru Mitoma. Cucurella had an excellent game, was barely dribbled past, won duels, helped Chelsea win and was ultimately named the man of the match.

He was tested for the second time in the Premier League match against Fulham, and again Cucurella stood out playing the right back and going head-to-head with former Chelsea player, Willian.

It is rare to find players who can play in both the right and left back positions. Joao Cancelo is the only player at this time who can play in both positions without trace of which is his best.

Marc Cucurella who is a natural left back now shows an unbelievable amount of comfort playing in the right back position. His dedication and overall fighting spirit are very visible on the pitch. It’s unsure Chelsea would let him leave if he continues in this form.
