Dani Alves facing nine years in jail if found guilty of sexual assault allegations

Former Barcelona defender Dani Alves, may get a lengthy nine years jail sentence, if found guilty of the sexual assault allegations against him.

Spanish prosecutors are pushing for a nine-year prison sentence for Alves, following allegations of the Brazilian sleeping with a young woman in a Barcelona nightclub on December 30, 2022, leading to his arrest in January, 2023.

The allegations has led to Dani Alves, 40, to be held in prison custody without bail for over ten months now, per Soccerbrief.

The Barcelona legend who last played as a right-back for Mexican side Unam Pumas, also saw his contract terminated by the club in January over the allegations.

Under Spanish law, allegations of non-consensual relations fall under the general charge of assault, with convictions typically resulting in jail sentences ranging from a four years minimum, up to a maximum of 15 years.

The former Brazil international has since maintained his innocence, saying that the encounter was entirely consensual, AP News reports.

However, if Dani Alves loses in the assault trial, he would also have to pay a fine of €150,000 (£130,000), which prosecutors are asking for in compensation for the woman.
