Manchester United goalkeeper, David De Gea have rejected the new contract offer given to him by the club with a reduced salary from the £375,000-per-week he currently earns.
De Gea, 32, is being urged by Manchester United to sign an extension with a pay cut. With a salary of £375,000 per week, he is the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world and the highest-paid player at Old Trafford.
De Gea reportedly thinks he is still a key member of Erik ten Hag’s team. The Spanish goalkeeper has played in 42 games across different tournaments, with 18 shutouts. He joined the team from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making him the club’s longest-tenured player.
De Gea is practicing playing out from the back under the Dutch coach since Ten Hag is known for preferring his goalkeepers to do so. Although the team wants him to stay, the Spaniard is aware that he will have to accept a pay cut.
The Athletic claims that even though Manchester United have a one-year extension provision, they have decided not to exercise it. Instead, United wants to reach an extension, and negotiations will go on.
In the event that De Gea does not sign a new contract and leaves in the summer, the Red Devils appear to have looked for potential replacements. David Raya of Brentford has been on Ten Hag’s radar due to a strong campaign at the Gtech Community Stadium. In 28 games, he has kept nine clean sheets.
