Diakhaby, Busst and some of the worst injuries in soccer

Diakhaby recently suffered one of the worst injuries in football, and as one doctor puts it, one of the worst that can happen in sports.

As the dust begins to settle on the news that he could be out for over a year, we look at some of the worst injuries in soccer.

1. David Busst

Worst injuries in football

David Busst was turning out for Coventry when the defender collided with Manchester United’s Denis Irwin. The collision resulted in a fractured tibia and fibula and meant he never returned to play professional football. His is arguably one of the worst injuries in the history of football.

2. Henrik Larsson

Larsson suffered a terrible injury 12 minutes into a UEFA cup tie while playing for Celtic versus Lyon in 1999. Two shears meant a completely broken leg. He did return after 8 months and recaptured his stunning form before his injury. He won the European golden boot after the injury, scoring 53 goals in the process. Larsson managed 3 league titles in his subsequent years at Celtic before earning a move to Barcelona.

3. Eduardo

Eduardo suffered a career defining injury while playing for Arsenal versus Birmingham City in 2008. He and Arsenal were enjoying a rich vein of form and in the title hunt before the injury. The treatment process ensured he was out for almost a year (296 days). He returned from the injury but was never quite the same player.

4. Luke Shaw

The Englishman suffered a double leg fracture that kept him out for 11 months in 2015. Since his return from that injury his career has been blighted by a number of injuries. Although when he is on the pitch, he still shows moments of quality that keeps him in both Manchester United and England squads.

5. Kieron Dyer

Another Englishman on the list, Dyer explained that his double leg break in 2007 was the beginning of the end of his career. He suffered the injury while playing for Westham in a carling cup game versus Bristol Rovers. He spent 280 days out injured and never was to be the same player upon recovery.

Djibril Cisse in his time at Liverpool suffered a nasty leg break that left doctors considering amputation in order to save him.
