Erik ten Hag asks Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Manchester United in January

Manchester United coach, Erik ten Hag has reportedly asked Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club during the January transfer window per Telegraph.

Erik ten Hag had wanted to keep Cristiano Ronaldo when he first took over as Manchester United manager but things switched up quickly.

There was an impromptu gathering at United Carrington training center on Monday after Manchester United’s humiliating defeat to Manchester City.

At the gathering, a plea for cordial bonding should continue and the 6-3 defeat should cause any chaos nor point fingers of blame at any player or staff. Ronaldo’s future was also in discussion.

Manchester City defeat

Manchester United went into the derby match with Manchester City with lots of hope having won a couple of straight matches before going into the international break.

The match took a different turn after Man Utd went down 4-0 in the first half. Gifting Erling Haaland his third hat-trick of the season and Phil Foden his first hat-trick.

Manchester United are now 6th on the Premier League table, nine points behind league leaders, Arsenal.

Ronaldo sat on the bench all 90 minutes of the match. Erik ten Hag in a post-match interview said he couldn’t bring on the player while Man Utd was facing such a humiliating defeat out of respect he has for him and what he has achieved.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s struggle

The struggles of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner started towards the end of his time in Italy with Juventus. Ronaldo was a wantaway player by Massimiliano Allegri.

His return to Manchester United started in a not too bad way though things again changed quickly after Manchester United failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The Portuguese striker seeks to leave Manchester United as he’s still keen on exploring Champions League football but got rejected by a good number of clubs.

Things got a little worse into the new season as he was left to be a bench warmer in Manchester United matches. It also extended to the Portuguese national team as he got blasted by Portuguese media for their loss to Spain.

Erik ten Hag on Ronaldo’s contract

After stating why he didn’t bring on Ronaldo in Manchester United lost against Manchester City, Erik ten Hag went on to say the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is free to leave the club during the January transfer.

Ronaldo would be able to leave Manchester United if he finds a club who are willing to sign him.

Former Man Utd captain, Roy Keane has called out Manchester United and Erik ten Hag for showing nothing but disrespect to Ronaldo while ridiculing his reasons for not bringing up against City.
