Karim Benzema retires from international football

France striker, Karim Benzema has announced his retirement from international football a day after the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Benzema was part of the France team that was selected for the World Cup but couldn’t participate after he was hit by injury in the first training the country had in Qatar.

The Real Madrid striker reportedly had a fall out with France national team. Benzema had requested to stay in Qatar while receiving treatment for his injury. His request was declined by the France coach, Didier Deschamps and the team doctor.

The decision was not cool with the 2022 Balon d’OR winner who immediately cut ties with the team. Benzema rejected an invitation by France President, Emmanuel Macron to go watch the final in Qatar.

Benzema called an end to his international journey and announced his international retirement. The second time the player will be without international football, the first coming after he was ban by the federation for sexual related violence.

On his Instagram page, Benzema wrote;

“I made the effort and the mistakes it took to be where I am today and I’m proud of it! I have written my story and ours is ending.”
