125 people dead as fight erupt between supporters in Malang, Indonesia

A staggering number of 125 people has reportedly died during a football league match after a fight erupted between opposite fans in the early hours of Sunday.

The match was between Arema FC and rival club, Persebaya Surabaya. Both teams are the biggest football teams in Indonesia. The clash started in the stands after home team Arema FC were defeated 3-2.

After the final whistle, fans of Arema FC invaded the pitch in anger and police began to firing teargas, leading to suffocation and chaos amongst fans who are seeking to run out.

Over 300 people are reported to be injured with fear of death toll looking to increase.

Governor of East Java province, where the sad incident occurred, earlier reported that the death toll was 131. National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo clarified the numbers, saying some casualties were counted twice.

President Joko Widodo has ordered all league matches in the country to be suspended pending investigation of the cause of the incident.

“I have specially requested the police chief to investigate and get to the bottom of this case,” Sportsmanship, humanity and brotherhood should be upheld in Indonesia.”

“I regret this tragedy and hope that it will be the last to occur in Indonesian football. We cannot have anymore (of this) in the future.”

According to Indonesia’s National Police Chief in what is one of the world’s deadliest stadium disasters of all time.
