Manchester United set to be kicked out of the Champions League next season even if they manage to qualify

Manchester United could be kicked out of the Champions League next season even if they manage to qualify.

Erik Ten Haag’s men are currently sixth on the premier league log, nine and six points behind Aston Villa and Tottenham respectively. They have a game in hand over Aston Villa and still have a good chance of European qualification.

Why Manchester United could be kicked out of the Champion’s League

The reason Manchester United could be kicked out of the Champion’s League is due to their new co-owner’s business path.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his partial take over at the club in the final weeks of February as part of his multi-club model.

UEFA rules binding multi-club ownership restricts clubs owned by the same party from competing in the same European competition.

Ratcliffe’s firm INEOS also owns Ligue 1 club OGC Nice. The club are currently fifth in Ligue 1 and have a good chance of qualifying for the Champion’s League.

Because of Nice Manchester United could be kicked out of the Champion's League

With both club having good chances of qualifying for the CL, they could both breach UEFA regulations according to the sun.

As a result, one side has to drop out of the competition they are both set to compete in. According to the rules, whichever team finished highest in the league to qualify for the competition will be preferred.

As it stands, Nice are level on points with just fourth places Lille, and just four points behind second place. They have a solid chance of finishing higher than United this season.

Possiblity of missing out on European football all together

Manchester United could be kicked out of the Champions League next season, but they could miss out on Europe altogether.

The same rules as explained above apply should both teams only end up managing qualify for Europa league or Europa conference league.

Looking ahead

Manchester United face a battle to qualify for the champion’s league after a below par season. They can finish the season with silverware though after qualifying for the semi’s of the FA cup.

They turned in a performance of the season to beat Liverpool and end Klopp’s quadruple chasing campaign.

Manchester United will now hope to finish the season as strongly as possible.
