Mascherano reveals the player that made him leave Barcelona

Former Barcelona defender, Javier Mascherano has revealed the player that made him leave Barcelona.

Mascherano spent eight years with Barcelona, winning many trophies and leaving a statement before departing the Catalan club.

The former Argentina youth team coach in an interview with Informe+ disclosed the moment he knew his time at Barcelona was up and he needed to leave. He confessed making a phone call to his agent, telling him he had to leave Barca after seeing Umtiti train.

“I’ve had thousands of mistakes in my career, but if there’s one thing I’ve had, it’s that I’ve always been a great team-mate. I saw Umtiti train on the first day, I called my agent and told him: Walter, my spell at Barca is over, someone who is on a different level has arrived”, he said.

He also confessed not being the perfect player for Pep Guardiola’s style of play. The former Liverpool player used to be a defensive midfielder but switched to be a defender after joining Barcelona.

“I wasn’t a player for Pep’s style. That was the reality and I knew it”.
