Messi’s Argentina suffers defeat in their first World Cup match

Argentina has suffered a defeat in their first World Cup group stage game against Saudi Arabia, putting the world at shock.

After taking the lead, in subtle penalty taken by Lionel Messi, Saudi Arabia put in a massive display in the second half and had two goals past Argentina’s Emi Martinez.

Argentina still World Cup favorite?

Argentina were arguably the most talked about team heading into the World Cup. They were drawn as winners alongside Brazil and France.

With a poor first leg performance, doubts are now surrounded around Argentina still being the favorites to win the World Cup.

They’ll have to at least win their two group matches left to be able to qualify to the knockout stage.

Saudi Arabia ends Argentina 36 match winning streak

Prior to the loose at the Argentina World Cup opener, the South American team has not lost a match since 2019, making them unbeaten in 36 matches played within that period.

As unexpected as it is, Saudi Arabia were the least team on the book to defeat Argentina but second half efforts from Saleh Al-Shehri and S. Al Dawsari were enough to end Argentina records.

Doubts on knockout qualification

Argentina will now have to win the two matches in their group against thougher teams or risk been knocked out of the World Cup.

Argentina will now fight to finish at least second in the group. A draw between Mexico and Poland would also restore hope for Argentina.
