Erling Haaland missed the most big chances this season; no surprises for second and third

Many much heralded players feature in the list of players who missed the most big chances in the Premier League this season.

Opta puts a big chances, (e.g. penalties) to be a situation where a player should reasonably be expected to score. It is usually in a one on one scenario or from very close range. The ball has a clear path to goal and there is low to moderate pressure on the shooter.

1. Erling Haaland – 34

The Norwegian has been in imperious form for Mancunians since his arrival in 2022. He has proven to be nearly unstoppable at times at least that is what it looked like in his first season. He appeared to slow down this season but he is just nine short of last season’s total.

He scores a lot more than he misses but 34 big chances missed is perhaps not uncharacteristic of the striker. His glaring near post miss against Liverpool is a typical example of him fluffing his lines.

2. Darwin Nunez – 27

Nunez is one of the most unlucky strikers in the Premier League, especially since his move from Benfica last season.

The striker is often guilty of missing gilt-edged chances. He missed 27 big chances this season with most, as fans would remember, hitting the woodwork. Well, to put a number to that, nine in total hit the woodwork.

He still contributes massively to how Liverpool play with his work rate and ability to keep plugging away after missing chances.

3. Nicholas Jackson – 24

The Senegalese has had a decent start to life in the Premier League under the circumstances. To be fair, it’s his first season in a Chelsea side that had a bang average season.

23 goal contributions, including 17 goals in 44 appearances is not bad for a player so much maligned.

His 24 missed chances accounts for the criticisms he has faced this season however.

4. Ollie Watkins – 22

Watkins bagged 19 Premier League goals excluding penalties, a tally that is only behind Haaland, Isak and Palmer.

If you consider that he has been unlucky after hitting the woodwork 5 times this season, his tally becomes more impressive.

He however missed 22 big chances, now that he can perhaps hold his hands up and admit he can do better. And he most definitely has to if he wants to sign for one of the bigger sides, a move he certainly deserves.

5. Alexander Isak – 21

The Swede scored as many big chances as he missed this season, 21. He has still managed to have an OUTSTANDING season for a below par Newcastle side this season.

Isak is on the radar of some of Europe’s top sides, including Arsenal who are rumored to be interested in him.
