Real Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich all after Xabi Alonso but should Chelsea also be in the race?

Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has pointed out that three clubs are working on deals to recruit Xabi Alonso as new head coach. But Chelsea should also be in the race to land Xabi Alonso and here’s why.

When you hear clubs such as Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich circling an individual, then that individual must be doing a lot right. Xabi Alonso certainly is.

Get this, the Spaniard has managed 75 games since he took over at Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022. He has won 50 of those games, drawn 15 and lost just 10, averaging 2.2 points per game.

The former Liverpool midfielder took charge of Bayer Leverkusen having never managed a first team game before. He guided the team who were in a relegation place to sixth and the semi final of the Europa League.

This season, he has proved that he is no fluke and has taken his side to stratospheric heights. NO SIDE has managed to get the better of Alonso’s side this season in ALL competitions. They are top of the league, ten points above Bayern, and also into the quarter final of the Europa League. Record breaking Alonso has everyone in Bayer Leverkusen dreaming of their first silverware in 31 years!

Three HUGE suitors and a dark horse?

Interest in the services of Xabi Alonso has risen as quickly as his stock has. He has been linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich who have managers stepping down at the end of the season. He has also now been linked to Real Madrid as confirmed by Uli Hoeness.

Xabi Alonso’s style of play doesn’t fit any of the sides he has been linked with so far. There have been questions whether he can adapt his side to play in a back four and on the front foot through out a game.

Enter Chelsea. Chelsea and Xabi Alonso look like a match made in heaven. They have all the players to execute Xabi Alonso’s style of play perfectly and should be in the running to land him.

For now, Xabi Alonso’s stance is that it’s too early to speculate on his future but that can change.

Xabi Alonso is a manager who loves a challenge and the Blues are at the beginning of a good project. With the young players at their disposal, Chelsea should also be in the race to land Xabi Alonso.

With Pochettino’s job hanging in the balance, Chelsea can capitalize on any uncertainty surrounding Alonso’s future.
