Iran faced England in their first group stage match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, loosing 6-2 after 90 minutes of play.

Iran scored two goals from Mahdi Taremi who saw his volley past England’s goalkeeper, Pickford and finding it’s way into the back of the net. His second goal came from the penalty spot.

Iranian players shocked the World after they all stayed mute as the Iranian national anthem was being played in the stadium just before the kickoff of the match.

Fans also joined in staying quite as the country’s most respected song was being played. Instead of singing along, the fans were heard making boo chants, showing they are disgusted by something.

Why Iran players didn’t sing their national anthem

Iran footballers join millions in the protest going on in their country. Iranians are protesting the death of Masha Amini who died in police custody after she was arrested for improper wearing of the hijab.

22-year-old Masha Amini was accused of violating the Iran dress code for women. To further fight against the injustice on the young lady, Iranians began chanting Masha Amini’s name in the 22nd minutes of the match.

Iran players just held themselves and heard their mouths shut as fans booed the country’s anthem as it was played, per The New York Post.

Iranians in Doha stadium were seen holding up placards that read, “Freedom for Iran” and “Women Life Freedom.”

Reports has it that at least 419 protesteryhas been killed since the begin of the protest that speaks against the injustice on women.

Iran captain said the players would support all the victims who lost their lives in relation to the protest.

“We have to accept that the conditions in our country are not right and our people are not happy,” Hajsafi said.

Hajsafi also added that families of the victims “should know that we are with them, we support them and we sympathize with them.”
