An investigation has been launched after the clash at the Mestalla that saw Vinicius Jr racially abused by a child.
Another controversy in an already controversial game
The game itself was fraught with controversies as both set of players were left feeling aggrieved by refereeing decisions.
The match which ended in a two all draw saw Jude Bellingham receive a red card at the final whistle. He was red carded for using foul language while expressing his displeasure after Madrid’s injury time goal was disallowed.
Jude Bellingham believed the referee should not have blown the final whistle while Madrid were finishing off an attack. The goal would have completed a memorable come back had it stood.
Further controversy has now been added after the match. It has been reported that a child racially abused Vinicius Jr during the game, calling him a monkey.
Other similar incidents of Vini abuse
It marks yet another game in which Vinicius Jr has been a racially abused, especially one at the Mestalla. Vini scored a brace in the game as celebrated with a cupped ear and a raised fist. He wanted to show that the hate would do nothing affect his game.
Vini Jr experienced something similar last year at the Mestalla that forced him to threaten to walk off the pitch. Valencia were punished with a partial stadium closure and a fine.
Before that he had experienced several sickening abuse which led to calls for steeper punishment for offenders.
Four Atletico Madrid fans were charged for hanging an effigy of Vinicius Jr over a bridge last year. In a separate incident he was a target of several cynical fouls and chants in a league match versus Mallorca.
An investigation surrounding Vinicius Jr racially abused by a child is just terrible to see. It is an indication of how little progress football is making in curbing racism.
La Liga is clearly powerless in trying to resolve this problem of abuse. The organization have been accused of failing Vinicius Jr as he single handedly stands against his abusers.
